He puts forward the research-based argument that while the extrinsic motivation of reward and punishment e.g. money, can improve performance on simple, mehanical tasks, it actually has a negative effect if there is any element of creativity or problem-solving involved.
Whereas when people who have Intrinsic motivation – an `inner desire to do something well - hit snags, they are much more likely to solve them and deliver top performance.
