DEFINING RADICAL CANDOR

Interview with Kim Scott, author of Radical Candor (sic). When Scott’s book first came out there was quite a lot of press about it, most of which seemed to suggest that it involves being brutally honest with your feedback: just tell it like it is, with an intimation that if they can’t take it, then the hell with them. The subtitle “be a kickass boss“ didn’t help.

Actually Scott is much more sophisticated than this and, while it’s true that she advocates direct and honest feedback, she squarely places it within the context of a strong and open relationship, with the emphasis on relationship. She calls it “caring personally and challenging directly”

Turns out to be what I do for my clients: offering them honest, direct feedback, delivered with compassion. Now I have a name for it!
